My Place and Yours

Well, I am participating in a blogger world thingo yet again, linked through Punky&Me.

My Pin Cushion

For years, I had an old CWA purchase, a little cane basket with checked cotton top, complete with delicate lace frill. This was bought “pre-children” in the lovely town of Barcaldine, when I first started my sewing journey. Hubby had just bought me a Pfaff, to replace the ancient Singer I had, for our first wedding anniversary present. There was a little town fair on, and I bought my pin cushion at the CWA stall, along with some cakes. That pin cushion now lives in my craft draw, full of metallic coloured head pins, that are so old they are too blunt to go through fabric. That pin cushion is my paper pin cushion. I use those pins when I am copying patterns, or drafting new patterns. And yes Sis, I do realise just how anal it is to have pins only for paper. No need to snigger.

But, that isn’t the pin cushion I want to tell you about. My pin cushion is a special one, that I made for myself. It combines my love of cross stitching and my love of sewing. This cushion was made using a technique called Biscornu, where two squares are joined, in such a way that you are left with an 8 sided square. But most special of all, my pin cushion is red, and a couple of thousand kilometres away, is a matching one, this time in blue, that lives on my sister’s sewing table, being her pin cushion. Its special to share my hobby with my sister.

And now, its has its own special place …. not too close to the edge of the table, as I caught my dog with it one day, pulling pins out of it with his teeth. I swear the animal has a death wish.

Oh it’s beautiful & yes, very special, it’s lovely that your sister has a matching one too!

I doubt my sister will ever be the crafting type, but she’s still a teenager so you never know….

Thanks so much for joining in this week!

How special that your sister has your pin cushions sister.

I’m envious of your very tidy/organised sewing space and I also like very much the way you store your scissors.

Thankyou Jackie, Vic and Jody ……. and thanks for the comment about the scissors. I saw the idea using a wooden cup tree, in a classic “country distressed” craft set up. but that cup tree does a fine job, and stops me dropping them on the floor, as I often do.
